Welcome Message from 2010 CHNA Board Chairperson
Friends and Neighbors,
We are all fortunate to live in this wonderful, historic neighborhood called Converse Heights. The sidewalks in much of the neighborhood connect us, yet life is busy and we can all probably do a little more to enhance our neighborhood.
I would like to ask that each one of you reading this make an effort to become more involved in our neighborhood, whether your involvement comes in the form of volunteer hours or in payment of Association dues. Only about 15% of us have joined the Association, and I urge you to support it financially with a donation of at least $25. Our website, www.converseheights.org, now boasts a PayPal option, so it takes only a few minutes to make a big impact.
How are your dollars spent? In 2009 your contributions and volunteer hours were used to:
- Repaint the fence, and repair the kiosk, at Happy Hollow Park
- Host Easter and Independence Day events for children
- Hire extra policemen on Halloween
- Maintain three neighborhood entrances (Mills Ave., Twin Drive, and Connecticut at Woodburn)
- Repair broken water lines at one of the entrances, and pay for water usage
- Partner with the Kudzu Coalition to remove kudzu on Ivy Street
- Work with the City to maintain our new trees and remove dead ones
- Finalize a Tree Agreement with the City of Spartanburg that ensures that all of the trees planted during the big Tree Project will be properly cared for
- Install a marker commemorating the neighborhood’s placement on the National Historic Register
- Work with the City and the SC DOT to help turn the Boyd / Mills / Sherwood intersection into a 5-way stop with new stop signs
In addition, we obtained a Neighborhood Pride Grant from the City of Spartanburg that will be used in 2010 to beautify the three neighborhood entrances. We will need to match 30% of this grant with volunteer hours and in-kind contributions, and as this project gets underway we will let you know how you can contribute!
Our Annual Meeting this year will be a neighborhood social and will be held on Tuesday, April 13th from 7:00 – 8:00 at the Converse College Alumni House. Please make every effort to stop by, see some of your neighbors, and learn more about what your neighborhood’s association actually does.
At this meeting, we are honoring Mr. Roger Milliken as our first “Neighbor of the Year.” Although he will not be able to be in attendance that evening, we will be announcing a special “something” to commemorate his long-term commitment to the support of Converse Heights. If you should see Mr. Milliken, please thank him for his vision and for his contributions, both of which have had a tremendously positive impact on our neighborhood.
Thank you, and I look forward to a great 2010!
Francie Satterfield
2010 CHNA Board Chair
